i'm still getting dozens of hits a day from people looking for what i assume is current info on chaba. yeah, no, nenes, we're over that and working on songda already. if you want current typhoon chaba updates check the joint typhoon weather center.

great play by play of the MTV VMAs 2004, courtesy of Fluxblog. favourite seven minute block of time:

8:55 Missy is back from a safari or something. Xtina looks supercute.

8:56 Usher wins, somehow besting Jay-Z.

8:57 Shut up, Usher!

9:00 Kerry daughters: kinda cool, I guess. Bush daughters: dim, passive aggressive.

9:02 Thankfully, Lenny Kravitz has lost the long flat-ironed hair! Now he's 2% less douchey.

did i say a typhoon wasn't coming? that's not exactly true. but i hope it stays on course--meaning away from us.

i was just reading the v. excellent extended cake mix, and she left with the rather curse-like "the future is just like today, only longer."

I DO NOT ACCEPT THAT AS THE TRUTH. I WILL MAKE MY FUTURE BETTER THAN MY PRESENT. IF MY FUTURE IS NOT AN IMPROVEMENT ON MY PAST THEN IT IS NO FUTURE AT ALL.

man, i need some bleeping help.

help me.

i'm effing developing an ulcer, i know it. i'm completely open to anxiety, and anything will set it off. not anything, but a mere mention of cancer, death, weather, will do it. which is like, every 10 minutes.

i've just been told there's another typhoon coming, but it's from my family. i hate to make generalizations, but i will right now. this whole effing island runs on a network of chinese whispers so that if someone says, "oh, i saw that satellite photo on tv, it looks like another storm" at 9am, by 10am our house will be boarded up and people will be panicking in the streets. i know there isn't a typhoon coming, i know i have to take everything with a grain of salt, but i am so wound up right now i am shaking.

i am a fucking, pathetic wreck and i need to get a grip. i need to make myself strong so that when the bad *does* arrive, i will be physically able to cope, even though mentally i know i will shut down as always.

storm watch cancelled. yay. last night i had a dream that st. john's turned its old lower school campus into a snake den, with modified lockers holding a variety of lethal snakes. all the male snakes were put into a giant aviary-like pit, and the females kept separately. the kids weren't allowed to touch any of the snakes that slithered out, only the teachers could return them. however, the class that was actually taught in the snake pit was a cooking class. there were giant bottles of soy sauce and chinese wine, a bunch of condiments and a science lab table modified into a cooking station.

interpretations, please!

wind still here. maybe 40-50 mph. some rain. still effing scary out.

Guam feeling 80 MPH winds from Chaba; GPD rescues stranded teens

by Sabrina Salas Matanane, KUAM News
Monday, August 23, 2004

According to the Office of Civil Defense, officers with the Guam Police Department rescued three stranded teenagers from Lada Gardens who were seeking shelter when their vehicle broke down. Mayor's offices across the island continue to remain open for village assistance.

Meanwhile, the number of island residents seeking shelter in designated emergency shelters has increased to 1,986 residents.

As of 12 Monday morning the eyewall of Typhoon Chaba was pounding the island of Rota, with winds there reportedly as high as 135 miles per hour. The center of typhoon Chaba was located by radar near latitude 14.5 degrees north and longitude 145.3 degrees east. This is about 80 miles northeast of Guam, 30 miles east-northeast of Rota, 40 miles south of Tinian and 50 miles south-southwest of Saipan.

Maximum sustained winds are 120 MPH with gusts up to 150 MPH. Typhoon Chaba is moving westward at 12 MPH.

Guam remains in Condition of Readiness "1", and the island is currently experiencing damaging winds of 55-65 MPH with gusts up to 80 MPH. Winds may be higher depending on the exact position of the storm's eyewall.

i am on the verge of tears. the power is out again, there are ominous creaks, the wind is relentless, we're flooding in the house, i am worried about my condo disappearing into the ocean, the fucking meteorologists say it's going north, no it's going south, it won't hit guam, it will, it is, i'm so bloody tired, anxious and scared and i wonder why i fucking live on this island.

20040822

the eye of the storm is passing over the tinian channel. rota is still being hit hard. the winds here have increased slightly, but alarmingly. that north-northwestern turn is not happening.

rota is reporting winds of up to 130mph, guam's highest winds are at 75mph at andersen air force base. the airport is reporting winds at 58mph. the suckah slowing down, which is bad for everyone, especially rota. the strongest part of the eyewall is still on top of it. they don't expect the winds to die down until sometime tomorrow morning. hopefully earlier than later, but with the slowdown, who knows.

oh heck. the power just went out again.

there is a widely held belief that when the barometric pressure drops, babies will too. almost 100 expectant mothers are at the guam memorial hospital, waiting out the storm. i'm not sure if this is true, but babies are always born in storms. but then again, babies are always born, period. if you are going in labour, you're gonna want to be at the hospital anyway.

the santa rita bridge in the south collapsed, completely impassible. for those of you who have never been, it's a tiny bridge, but people are still stuck. polaris is still impassible, as is the agahan bridge, also in the south.

power is out throughout the north, including dededo, yigo, and parts of harmon.

wow, i'll bet when you read there was going to be a blog about a big typhoon it would be all dramatic and harrowing. hey, it still could be. i, for one, am glad that mine is mundane and boring.

believe me, i'm still on the verge....

just finished talking to julius, who is in tamuning. no power. just trying to sleep, but sort of impossible. reminded me that the filipino typhoon food is adobo, as you can adobo anything that's defrosting in the freezer, and then keep it without refrigeration for a really long time as it is vinegar-based.

there has been three inches of rain dumped on island in the past hour. they are expecting an overall rise in the rain totals for the month of 12 inches by monday (4 more hours). sheesh. flash flooding still expected until 6am tomorrow.

the thing is, that even with the closest point of approach being now, the damaging winds won't stop until sometime late tomorrow. we're stuck in the house until then.

still freaking out, i'm sure.

i'm in the batcave, away from the slaughtering of gorillas and the imeldific platitudes, with the a/c on, "gilmore girls" on dvd, and completely spacing out with 2 caps of vitex and 3 of spirulina, whoo. it would almost be like normal, if i wasn't fully aware that the closest point of approach will be in, um, 40 minutes or so. rota and saipan have been slammed with the eyewall, and have been under it for several hours or so, according to east of the sun..., who is better at figuring doppler radar than i am. honestly, it looked like the eye was passing over saipan, from what i saw, but what do i know. i wish the radio dudes would stop saying chaba was moving away from guam, if the anticipated turn to the northwest happens when it happens. which it has not. it could still effing slam into us.

very volatile, this chaba.

so, usually during a typhoon, there are rituals. we usually pretend it's not happening. some people stock up on "typhoon food"--SPAM, junk food, buñuelos (fried donuts), beer--but we don't. we don't eat. maybe nibble. and the dogs aren't allowed to eat either, in case they need to poo or something. water, sure. i'll clean up pee, but no pooping in confined spaces, please! anyway, the minute all calms down, i feed them. the older ones are too nervous to eat, but the baby doesn't quite understand. and she's the poopiest of them all.

one of the strange fortunate misfortunes was that at 11.30pm last night, i found out that my folks' stand alone freezer's door had been ajar, for several days, from the looks of things. they are vacuum bag crazy, so it wasn't so bad cleaning it out. but i still threw away 6 giant garbage bags of stuff, which i took to the dump first thing. strangely fortunate, as i didn't find out about it during the typhoon, when i'd be stuck with stinky, rotting bags of food.

oh, yeah. definite surge in the mph-iness. cpu approaches.

so, it's 7.30pm, we have power back for now, but we were told that there might be an island-wide shutdown at 9pm. we're making the most of it. i'm online, my dad is watching imelda on dvd, my mom is watching a horrifying episode of 60 minutes filled with blood and gore of wildlife animals, and i'm trying to ignore it. we have one window uncovered--it's double glazed, typhoon proof--and it's freaking me out because it's so dark and stormy outside, i really can't look out. the noise of the wind and rain can be overwhelming. i prefer the hole of my room, which is built against a cliff, and therefore buffered from a lot of it.

okay this 60 minutes is really freaking me out, can you tell i am on the verge of medication?

i'm just stressed out. years of typhoons, you would think i would used to it, but there's a breaking point, and i think collectively, the island has reached it. then you get the new stress of wondering how literal that breaking point is. is the typhoon where my house collapses around me? concrete supposedly lasts centuries, but i don't think it was subject to the stress of repeated typhoons and earthquakes. water can seep through in the weirdest places. you think about your mortality a lot when you are at the mercy of nature.

okay, happy thoughts...happy thoughts.

eye of storm is 50 miles in diameter. it is supposedly passing through the tinian channel, but that's not confirmed.

gusts are at 55-65 mph. more rain.

agahan bridge is washed out. polaris point is still impassable. unpassable? don't go there.

two northern shelters have been closed due to maximum capacity.

did i say something about 11pm being the witching hour?

so okay, i left my condo on the water (noisy, lots of wind--the crazy bending in the bay window was freaking me out), contemplated offering my body to my neighbour (no, not sex, ritual sacrifice) for company but he's higher up and his bay window is in worse shape than mine. and there's no food, not that i'm hungry or anything.

drove from tumon (coastal) up to barrigada (highest point in the central-northern area) and it's just as windy here but it's not as loud. yet. i think we'll bear the brunt of it as we're so high up, even though historically, it's the south that gets it every time. everything was closed except some gas stations, and some food places in tumon. i was going to stop at fuji-ichiban ramen place near me, but the cops were arresting a patron inside, so i changed my mind and headed to my folks' home. ambulances rushing everywhere. at least one accident. lots of power crews securing lines. only a couple of small trees down now. high tide is causing coastal roads to flood, and i think the reason we don't have power is because lower barrigada is probably drowning at the moment. last storm they had to rescue people in jet skis, and it's landlocked....

oh, navy is definitely shutting down power to water wells at 9pm so hopefully everyone's got a bath tub full of flushing water....

my dogs are freaking out. in a quiet way. as is my mother. i'm a little more vocal, in a typing frenzy sort of way. i'm guessing the winds are at about 40-50 right now. oh wait. durrrrr. they just picked up. sheeeeeeetmusic.

my cousin is at a party right now, my goddaughter is celebrating her birthday at gameworks as i type, our neighbour has his generator on, i'm sitting in the dark, with just the glow of my ibook illuminating the dark and stormy, er, afternoon. what the heck is going on here?

*wow*. sometime in the past fifteen minutes they changed the national weather service site. like, not just the warnings and forecasts, but also the layout and design. snazzy. NOW FECKING REPORT THIS THING MORE CORRECTLY WHYDONTCHA!!!!

Typhoon's eye to pass near or over Rota

Pacific Daily News, news@guampdn.com

Typhoon Chaba was 155 miles east northeast of Guam as of 2 p.m. today, packing sustained winds of 110 mph.

Wind gusts were at 130 mph.

Genny Miller, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service, said the typhoon continues to move west.

As of the 2 p.m. tracking, Chaba's estimated closest point of approach to Guam is around 11 tonight, she said.

The typhoon's eye is expected to pass near or over Rota. It may move within 100 miles of Guam, according to the National Weather Service.

Guam Power Authority will continue to keep islandwide electricity on for as long as it can.

As of 12:45 p.m. today, the power agency began receiving calls from different locations on the island reporting pocket power outages.

GPA spokesman Art Perez said the power agency's crews are responding to those outages and will continue to respond to similar calls for as long as wind conditions are bearable.

Winds will steadily increase, according to the Weather Service.

Gov. Felix Camacho placed the island in Condition of Readiness 1 at 9 this morning. Condition 1 means that damaging winds are expected within 12 hours.

oh blah blah blah. fecking just GO AWAY already. i'm in my anxiety mode. quick, someone tell a joke.

okay. flash flooding alerts for the south--they expect feeder bands to being dumping 2 inches of rain an hour to start soon. the main road going to the south is impassable at polaris point, almost all the lanes are washed out. power is out here in barrigada (central), tumon (north coastal), and most of the south. we still have water, but most of the south is out, but will definitely be out as they will shut down and secure the well pumps at 9pm.

they are expecting gusts up to 80 mph to start shortly.

now the joint typhoon weather service is saying that the closest point of approach will be 18 miles offshore to the north.

*sigh*. we're in the middle of two storms. literally. there's aere to the west, and chaba to the east. chaba is above us, but headed straight west, instead of turning north, because aere is pushing it southward as it races up to japan. it looks like it's going to nail saipan on the head. i hope it's not terrible for them, and i certainly hope it doesn't hit us. i'm still completely shell-shocked from 2001.

20040818

let me keep you informed. it's raining, it's raining, OH MY GOD IT WON'T STOP RAINING!!!!!

no way to treat a mini.

so now they think the triple homicide at kim's vegetable stand is a family violence case.

i'm no less horrified.

oh yeah, in other news, two skydivers plunged to their deaths as their parachute apparently fails to open. chief medical examiner dr. aurelio espinosa could not determine their exact cause of death as the bodies were "mangled, meaning to say their entire bodies were damaged from head to toe," he said. "there is no bone that is not fractured."

uncgh.

need a tractor?

we have 2 tractors for sale. kubota brand, M5400, 4
years old, one is narrow and the other is wide, comes
with grass cutting and plowing attachment, great
condition, asking $18,000 OBO, call 687-1108 for more
details.

horrifying botched robbery attempt at kim's vegetable stand in dededo. apparently the owner and her elderly mother are amongst the fatalities.

so, so sad and pointless. they were always super nice and polite, very hard working.

my new favourite blog!

OH MY &*($ing---WHAT THE--?!

found this on stereogum.com (a pretty cool music site, albeit with a scary britney fixation), who found it on slash dot:

Google has added number span searching to their engine, so if you search mastercard 5424000000000000..5424999999999999 for example, Google searches the entire range against its DB and returns credit card #s, sometimes with names, addresses, and other information that you don't want people to know.

^&*%, what? i highly suggest NOT plugging in your own credit card number, as you'll become a target for spyware, but stick to ranges instead. you may not see your number, but i tried it and came up with some interesting information about a bunch of people.

ok. do you want to buy me a new car? because i wouldn't mind. however, don't tell me how you got it....i don't know what you or i should or could do about this, but just be careful with your personal information in the meantime!
